| Helping Darebin Recycle Right
We want to help Darebin residents recycle better. Using our recycling (yellow) and food and garden waste (green) bins correctly helps ensure materials can be properly collected and recycled. Feedback from our recycling facilities and annual waste audits shows there are opportunities to improve recycling rates. Since May, we’ve been running a bin‑feedback program where contractors visually inspect kerbside recycling and food and green waste bins and leave feedback on tags. | Plastic Free July Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of Plastic Free July by pledging to refuse single-use plastics? Here are some practical actions you can take in Darebin to avoid single-use plastics : - Shop for pantry items and even milk plastic-free at one of the many bulk-buy stores in Darebin

| Free one-on-one energy support Graham is a volunteer advisor with Darebin Climate Action Now (DCAN) and offers one-on-one support to renters and homeowners. Since September 2025, he has supported 42 households to get off gas and go electric! Whether you are unsure where to start, need help understanding energy bills, or want guidance on appliance choices, EVs, batteries or solar installations, Graham is here to help. He usually meets people in their home for about 90 minutes for a wide-ranging discussion on the options and their economic and climate impact. |

| UP community collection The UP Community is a local initiative founded by two educators and aims to reduce waste by collecting, repurposing, and redistributing everyday items, making sustainability accessible to everyone. Their next four-day pop-up event will be held at Alphington Community Centre from Sunday 5 – Wednesday 8 July, 10am – 2pm daily. To find out more about what can and can't be accepted, visit their Facebook page. |

| National Tree Day Join Darebin Creek Management Committee, OzFish, Darebin City Council and Friends of Darebin Creek for National Tree Day and help make a lasting difference to the local environment. By planting native trees, shrubs, grasses and sedges, you'll contribute to the restoration of the creek and create vital habitat, food sources and wildlife corridors for small woodland birds, sugar gliders, Powerful Owls, and more!
The morning will begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony presented by respected Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder, Uncle Dave Wandin. Learn about innovative ‘Fish Hotels’ that support aquatic life with OzFish, who will lead a hands-on building session. All welcome - no experience needed. To ensure we have enough tools and supplies for everyone, please register in advance.

| Darebin Repair Cafe @ SPAN Get your broken items ready for mending and fixing at Repair Café in July. Sit with a volunteer fixer while they work on your item and show you (hopefully) how to repair and maintain it, and give you tips on how to avoid buying items that are hard to repair in the first place. Follow their facebook page for updates and registration link. Darebin Repair Café is run every second month at a rotating Darebin venue.
