Recognise heat stress Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially when we’re older, have young children or are pregnant, or have existing medical conditions. Long periods of hot weather can cause heat stress even in healthy people. Signs of heat stress include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, and heavy sweating. If left untreated, this can lead to heatstroke, which can be a life-threatening medical emergency. If you don't feel well call your doctor, Nurse-On-Call on 1300 606 024 or in an emergency, call 000 (triple zero).
To stay safe during a heatwave: - Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid caffeine and sweet drinks.
- Cool down with wet towels and cool showers
- Wear loose clothing
- Plan to go out only during the cooler parts of the day
- Close blinds and curtains early in the morning especially on north and west facing windows
- Use fans or air conditioning: consider saving energy and money by just cooling one room in your house
- Consider spending some time in one of our airconditioned libraries or another cool place if your home gets too hot – download our Keep Cool in Darebin map for options
- Hot cars can kill, so never leave children or pets in cars.
- Ensure pets have water and shade
- Know who to contact if you need help
- Be a good neighbour – check in on older or isolated neighbours to make sure they're ok

Take old batteries and broken electronics to a recycling drop-off point Do you have an item with a plug, battery or power cord that you need to get rid of, or some old batteries that you’re not sure what to do with? Batteries and old electronics don’t belong in your household bins. They can cause fires if they end up in our waste or recycling trucks.
By keeping e-waste out of your bins, it can be recycled into new things. Metals such as tin, copper or nickel can be reused to make new electronics.
It’s important we reuse these materials because they are non-renewable. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. But if they’re properly recycled, these materials can be reused endlessly.
Your small acts make a big impact on Victoria’s sustainable future.
To find your nearest e-waste drop-off point visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/e-waste

Keep your recycling loose Did you know that around 16% of Victorians are mistakenly putting their recycling into the bin in plastic bags? Bagged recycling can’t be processed and means your recycling may end up in landfill. By putting your recycling into the bin loose, more of it can be turned into new things like roads, footpaths, glass jars, planter boxes and clothing. For more information on how to recycle correctly, visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/recycling You can also check our NEW A-Z waste and recycling guide for a comprehensive list of how to recycle and dispose of many household items - check out the new A-Z waste and recycling guide. |

Protect your fruit trees and wildlife this summer As you net your fruit trees this summer, keep in mind Victorian Government regulations requiring all netting to have a mesh size of 5mm x 5mm or less at full stretch. These rules, introduced on 1 September 2021, aim to prevent harm to wildlife such as birds and bats. Non-compliant netting can lead to fines starting at $363 per net, increasing to $2,773 if escalated to court. To stay compliant: - Remove any netting with a mesh size larger than 5mm x 5mm
- Dispose of it responsibly by placing it in a strong biodegradable bag and placing in landfill bin
- Replace with compliant netting, widely available at garden retailers
- Fix netting tightly to tree trunks or use protective bags for individual branches.
